Ignorance Behind Veil Uproar: Ridley

IslamOnline.net & Newspapers

"Under Islam, I am respected. It tells me that I have a right to an education and that it is my duty to seek out knowledge," said Ridley.

CAIRO — Award-winning British reporter Yvonne Ridley has blamed the ignorance of Western politicians and media for the ongoing debate about the face-veil and other misconceptions about the status of women in Islam.

"Having been on both sides of the veil, I can tell you that most Western male politicians and journalists who lament the oppression of women in the Islamic world have no idea what they are talking about," Ridley, who reverted to Islam two years after a brief detention by Taliban, wrote in the Washington Post Sunday, October 22.

Ridley used to consider the veil as a mark of women oppression but changed hearts after reading about Islam and the Noble Qur'an.

"I'd been expecting Qur'an chapters on how to beat your wife and oppress your daughters; instead, I found passages promoting the liberation of women."

British former foreign minister Jack Straw has stirred an uproar after recently revealing he used to ask Muslim women to show their faces during meetings with him, describing the face veil as a symbol of separation.

"It is with disgust and dismay that I watch here in Britain …Straw describes the Muslim niqab as an unwelcome barrier to integration," said a mocking Ridley.

"Even British government ministers Gordon Brown and John Reid have made disparaging remarks about the niqab -- and they hail from across the Scottish border, where men wear skirts."

Respected

Ridley said Western politicians and media are wrongly blaming Islam for cultural customs in the Muslim world.

"They go on about veils, child brides, female circumcision, honor killings and forced marriages, and they wrongly blame Islam for all this -- their arrogance surpassed only by their ignorance," she wrote.

"These cultural issues and customs have nothing to do with Islam."

The prominent British reporter said Islam has enshrined equal rights for women.

"In Islam, superiority is achieved through piety -- not beauty, wealth, power, position or sex."

She insists that the Noble Qur'an guarantees women all the rights Western feminists have long fought for.

"Women in Islam are considered equal to men in spirituality, education and worth, and a woman's gift for childbirth and child-rearing is regarded as a positive attribute.

"Under Islam, I am respected. It tells me that I have a right to an education and that it is my duty to seek out knowledge, regardless of whether I am single or married."

Modest

Ridley said dress codes for Muslim women serve a purpose.

"My dress tells you that I am a Muslim and that I expect to be treated respectfully, much as a Wall Street banker would say that a business suit defines him as an executive to be taken seriously."

Islam sees hijab as an obligatory code of dress, not a religious symbol displaying one’s affiliations.

As for the face veil, the majority of Muslim scholars believe that a woman is not obliged to cover her face or hands.

Scholars, however, believe that it is up to women to decide whether to take on the veil.

After reverting to Islam, Ridley wore a hijab. Only then, she discovered how hijab-clad women are discriminated against in the West.

"I instantly became a second-class citizen," she said.

"Cabs passed me by at night, their 'for hire' lights glowing. One cabbie, after dropping off a white passenger right in front of me, glared at me when I rapped on his window, then drove off. Another said, 'Don't leave a bomb in the back seat' and asked, 'Where's bin Laden hiding?'"

Violence

Ridley refuted Western claims that Islam condones violence against women.

"As for how Muslim men are allowed to beat their wives -- it's simply not true.

"Critics of Islam will quote random Qur'anic verses or hadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad peace and blessing be upon him), but usually out of context," she insisted.

"If a man does raise a finger against his wife, he is not allowed to leave a mark on her body, which is the Qur'an's way of saying, "Don't beat your wife, stupid."

Ridley said violence against women was much higher in the West than in the Muslim world.

She said four million American women experience a serious assault every year.

"More than three women are killed by their husbands and boyfriends every day -- that is nearly 5,500 since 9/11," she added.

"It is also true that in the West, men still believe that they are superior to women, despite protests to the contrary. They still receive better pay for equal work -- whether in the mailroom or the boardroom -- and women are still treated as sexualized commodities whose power and influence flow directly from their appearance."

LabAid Cardiac Hospital - The real story behind the fancy ads!

I am really shocked reading this article :s... The authority needs to re-evaluate the LABAID's Service Quality and the Assurance of not doing business with human lives! - if this is the real scenario. Read the article below:

My intuition of writing this is to raise my voice against LabAid Cardiac Hospital and provide a real picture about LabAid, so that the LabAid hospital changes their attitude with their future customers. Please read the attached news paper article which was published on The Daily Janakantha on 19 Dec, 2007. Also, please see the actual condition of my father while he was under treatment at LabAid Cardiac Hospital:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnJZIg_x1KI

The person that you are watching on this video is not in this world anymore! He died on 11 Nov, 2007 at LabAid Cardiac Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh while treating under Prof.(Dr.) Baren Chakrabarti, Prof. (Dr.) M. Matiur Rahman (who is actually not a professor, but using this fancy title) and Prof. (Dr.) Ali Hossain (the best doctors in our country with some fancy fake title.!!!).

We trusted the fancy ads of LabAid, also trusted the fancy titled doctors and nurses. But look at the real picture of LabAid’s CCU Bed No. 8. After the surgery they left my father on the bed without any proper attention. The LabAid doctors are so busy to catch another new CCU patient, which they forget about stitching the surgery area of the current patient. Look at the blood all over the bed! Look at.. how clean LabAid’s CCU unit is!

I raised my voice when I saw the real picture of LabAid. For raising my voice I got slapped on my face in front of the all the people by the LabAid G.M. Mr. Imran Chowdhury.

I am sure LabAid doctors who were involve with my father’s treatment has got a good amount of share from the bill, but can they really tell that the hospital/or even the doctor’s has done a proper treatment for that helpless guy Mr. A. K. M. Fazlul Haq (my father)? He was just lying on the CCU Bed No. 8 helplessly for 15 days and expecting his sons, also the doctors will take care of him properly. We have done our part from the bottom of our heart; we were ready to spend all of our savings and everything to get a proper treatment for our father, because he is our father who took care of us properly. But, Mr. or Ms. LabAid Administrators. Have you guys taken care of my father properly? I am sure you did not, because I am the one who is one of your victims. How come a person who didn’t even have any heart surgery or any type of major surgery, but got a bill for almost five and half Lac taka (BD Tk. 5,50, 000.00, AU$8,155.00, US$7,288.00)?

Dr. Lutfor Rahman (Head of Cardiac Surgeon) I am pointing you because you are the golden son of our country. Do you guys still wanna claim that the Heart Surgery is cheaper in Bangladesh now? On 11 Nov, 2007 when my auntie (Ms. Sharmin Naaz, Assist. Commissioner of Taxes, Bangladesh Govt.) went to see with you regarding my father’s bill that time you mentioned about your contribution in Bangladesh. You were also talking about you can make 1 Lac take in a matter of second. Well, done Dr. Lutfor Rahman! Well done! We’re really proud of your contribution (?) to our country’s medical history! Here is one of your biggest contributions to our country’s medical history, which was published on the Daily Janakantha on 19 Dec, 2007 “LabAid has become a human killing machine.”

Life is very interesting Dr. Lutfor Rahman! When we lost our love ones then we feel for it, but then we forget about it. Instead of forgetting about my father’s death, I want to raise my voice against LabAid Cardiac Hospital and request all of you to “STOP GOING TO THE LabAID for any heart treatment” and wanna make those doctors to understand that they should not play with any humans life, because no matter how powerful or rich they could be, they will never be able to give a life back to a dead man’s life! So, STOP f..ing around with a human life, OKAI Dr. Lutfor Rahman, Prof (Dr.) Baren Chakraborty, also the others who are involve in this human killing business!

The LabAid hospital needs to know a little bit about the power of Internet in disseminating information. I will request to all of you also do the same (when forwarding the article, send CC or copies to the lab-aid related addresses, so that the LabAid individuals feel a little shame about their Hospital’s work activity every time they receive a copy of this email.

Here are the email addresses of the LabAid individuals with their full name:

Please appreciate "HER"

Tomorrow you may propose a working woman, but you should marry with these facts firmly grounded in your mind........

Here is a girl, who is as much educated as you are; who is earning almost as much as you do;

One, who has dreams and aspirations just as you have because she is as human as you are;

One, who has never entered the kitchen in her life just like you or your
Sister haven't, as she was busy in studies and competing in a system that
gives no special concession to girls for their culinary achievements.
One, who has lived and loved her parents & brothers & sisters, almost as
much as you do for 20-25 years of her life;

One, who has bravely agreed to leave behind all that, her home, people who
love her, to adopt your home, your family, your ways and even your family
name,

One, who is somehow expected to be a master-chef from day #1, while you
sleep oblivious to her predicament in her new circumstances, environment
and that kitchen

One, who is expected to make tea, first thing in the morning and cook
food at the end of the day, even if she is as tired as you are, maybe more,
and yet never ever expected to complain; to be a servant, a cook, a mother,
a wife, even if she doesn't want to; and is learning just like you are as
to what you want from her; and is clumsy and sloppy at times and knows that
you won't like it if she is too demanding, or if she learns faster than
you;

One, who has her own set of friends, and that includes boys and even men at
her workplace too, those, who she knows from school days and yet is willing
to put all that on the back-burners to avoid your irrational jealousy,
unnecessary competition and your inherent insecurities;
Yes, she can drink and dance just as well as you can, but won't, simply
because you won't like it, even though you say otherwise

One, who can be late from work once in a while when deadlines, just like
yours, are to be met;

One, who is doing her level best and wants to make this most important
relationship in her entire life a grand success, if you just help her some
and trust her;

One, who just wants one thing from you, as you are the only one she knows
in your entire house - Your unstinted support, Your sensitivities and most importantly - Your understanding, or love, if you may call it.

But not many guys understand this......Please appreciate "HER"

Love While You Live

Realize things before its too late.
Have lots of friends before you are alone.
Accept things rather than deny them.
Love people before you loose them.

Life comes just once.
Love it while you live it.

Happy New Year 2008

Happy New year to everyone. Wish you everyone a happy new startup after letting the 2007 as a page of your old memory and the 2008 as your next day. Today's sunset was the last Sunset of 2007 and tomorrow's Sunrise will be the 1st Day light of 2008. Today's sunset was the last page of your old memories and tomorrow's sunrise will be the new daylight of your Happy new year 2008! Hope you have a great happy successful life ahead with your family and friends.

Ok! friends.. Just few words to note down if you like and helps to redesign your plan for 2008 or Next:

Few of My Suggestion:
------------------------
You will get really surprised to Know Yourself if you ever know about your own capabilities and the power/strength you have in depth of your confidence.. You might even get scared of your capabilities which is hidden in You! So be confident and know yourself before knowing someone else :)

Life is just few moments where we come to know many people around us and in sometimes we feel like we don't like someone, we like a person more then someone else.. or we like or i should say Love someone more then anyone else.. But everything is just for this few moments you are alive here :) So don't regret for whatever you are getting or loosing.

In case of emotional people i should suggest forget about all the emotional feelings in which you are surrounded with.. This emotions is the only bindings who is not making you confident. Caring the emotions sometimes makes you to head into the wrong path. So it's better let not giving any chance to your Emotions to lead you, But let yourself leading your emotions and don't care it. You will be heading to your success and you will be not blind at least! But that really doesn't mean to leave from the humanity or Human norms or duties like helping the Poor people or the hopeless refugees.

Suggestion for my IT student friends - please get connected through the Technical Groups to get in touch with new updates, announcements or scopes which are discussed in the groups/forums etc. Never feel shy to shoot your question, cause the value of this question could be even more than you are thinking not making yourself silly. You never know - may be no one ever thought the way you are thinking and wanted to ask! So forget about your shyness and shoot your question to the groups or forums. There will be many friends waiting to reply any type of questions.

My wish list for 2008:
------------------------
My request to my younger Brother - be smarter, confident, proactive, intelligent than me. Start building your own career by your own calculation and decision - try building it by your own hand. In the mean time remember to guide your younger siblings too! I have trust on you that you will be there one day! Forget whatever you didn't get or you missed. Time moves on and nothing waits for anyone, so why bothering ? Move Forward just as you saw at - Meet the Robinson :)

My request to my old friends (22) to keep connected even after you guys get busy with lots of family stuff. At least keep connected saying hi or hello once in a month! :) After all we had a long walk up to now all together!

My request to Samiha Esha (a famous blogger) to keep blogging on different life style, career oriented , family member inter-relationship, duty to society, the relationship of friendship between a girl and a boy, stuff or guidance which makes female more confident and motivating to step forward. I just meant not to change her mind :)

My request to Technical Groups for do events together for more aggressive plans to develop the bridging of University Students and Professionals. Which will be a great scope of getting back the students interested to take Software Engineering as their career path.

My last update:
------------------
Few days back suddenly i bought a guitar and started learning some..

Thanks to Arun for his post on me and my guitar (i am taking it as my new year gift): http://www.somewhereinblog.net/blog/shukhimanoshblog/28755535
